Who we are
Flowerchild birthing services was created from the belief that motherhood should be entered with support, softness, healthy strength, and community.
We are a faith-led doula service devoted to nurturing women through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum with compassionate, personalized care. Our mission is to help mothers feel grounded, educated, and empowered while honoring the emotional and spiritual depth of the birthing experience.
At Flowerchild, we value gentle support, informed choices, and creating peaceful spaces where families feel safe and deeply cared for. Every birth story is unique, and we are honored to walk beside each family with warmth, presence, and intention.
Like the hibiscus flower we carry in our name, we believe women are designed to bloom — even through life’s most transformative seasons.
Legacy In Bloom:
The women behind Flowerchild Birthing Services; it runs in the blood.
My great, great-grandmother Abuela Jacinta, was THE towns midwife of Juan Acencio, Puerto Rico, during a time when doctors were scarce and medicine was not easily accessible. She became both healer and caregiver to her community — serving as the town’s midwife and, in many ways, it’s doctor. She helped deliver babies, cared for the sick, and even stitched wounds before sending patients to the hospital when needed. Because medicine was limited, she became deeply knowledgeable in herbal healing. She kept large jars of plants and herbs, using ancestral knowledge to care for her community and even to help filter water when chlorine began being introduced into Puerto Rico’s water systems.
When she moved to New York City with her daughter Mímí in the 1950s, she found work sewing pocketbooks, but her calling to care for others never left her. She was known by everyone, and everyone knew her. She welcomed people arriving from the island into her home, helping them find jobs, housing, and stability before sending them forward on their own journeys.Because of her generosity and guidance, many called her “Madrina” — Godmother.
Her impact reached far beyond her own family. When she passed, there were cars lined for miles — a reflection of how deeply loved, respected, and woven into her community she truly was.

Titi Gloria, (on the left) daughter of Abuela Jacinta. She was the first born & first to move from Puerto Rico to New York. While living in New York she became a nurse working in New York hospitals.
Titi Mimi, (on the right) daughter of Abuela Jacinta. She was the second to last child out of 6 children. She too was studying to become a nurse, and while she was an assistant nurse, she met her husband who was a patient that she was caring for. After she got married she didn’t go further into nursing.

My Mom, Alessandra Maya-Vargas. “I wanted to be a nurse ever since I was 5. My mom bought me my first Fisher-Price doctor kit for Christmas and I was practicing on everyone in the house. Then, when I turned 9, I decided I wanted to study pediatrics & cardiology. As a nurse practitioner.
When I applied for college, I immediately knew nursing school was my goal. I applied for nursing school and completed a year and a half until I realized I wanted something more adventurous and exciting. That is when I decided to shift my focus to becoming an EMT. Upon finishing my EMT certification, I worked in the first responder field for four years and then was encouraged by my coworkers to apply for the paramedic program.
I completed my paramedic certification and worked for another year. While working as a paramedic, I wanted to take to the next level and apply for a physician assistant program. But, the Lord led me into a different direction to be more available to raise a family. Once I married my husband, I moved into becoming a medical assistant and worked as a medical assistant for 15 years.”

From the age of 6, I knew I wanted to become a midwife. My love for babies, caring for mothers, and my love for the medical field all in one?! Cool! My mom would always buy me books on the human body, anatomy, and biology. Fast forward, around 2020 (16yrs old) in the midst of lockdown, I started getting videos of doulas, what they are, and what they do. I fell in love with the intimacy between a couple or individual instilling trust in someone who will be there to support, educate, & guide them through a pivotal process such as pregnancy, labor, delivery, birth, & postpartum.
In 2024 I started my doula program through ‘‘The Global Birth Community”, passed my exam, and became a certified doula in 2025. I was then blessed with my first birth experience by a lovely couple who trusted me to be their doula, and while I was in that room, I never felt more alive, and knew…this is exactly what I was meant to do.
I’m very honored to have such strong, courageous, ambitious, loving, caring, and intelligent women behind me. I am even more honored to continue this legacy!
